The Ashlar style of stonework has been known for it's use in monu-
mental architecture. Cutting the stones to uniformed shape and size
is a requirment which needs skill and the time of true craftsmen. These
factors in the early years of construction were the restrictive reasons
of limiting Ashler to monumental types of buldings.
Stonemasonry of this style presents more of a formal apperance.
When purchasing stone for this style, you must specificly state the requirement of Ashlar cut. Many of the larger suppliers will use large hydrylic cutting machines to size the stones to 4", 6", or 8" thickness. The FACE of the stones may be of different sizes, but they should be of retangular shape. Bulding with stone of this thickness against a exsiting surface, is known as a VENEER. In new construction, this is the most common method used today. One of common stone types for this use, is sandstone. The cost may vary from $150 to $250 per ton, which will cover 25 to 35 square feet of area.
