6" stone veneer over a fireplace

As you may notice, the firebox and chimney have been prebuilt by the brick and block masons. Stonemasons mainly do the stonework only.

The mortar used is a mixture of 3 parts barsand, and 1 part portland cement. Mix the sand and cement before adding water. Continue to mix while adding water. The mixture needs only to be wetted to the point where it sticks together when squeezed by hand.

The photos below shows the use of a string-line to maintain straight corners.

At a height of 28", a angle iron is laid to support the stonework across the openning of the fireplace.
