Why did I go to Cuba?
I went to Cuba because it is so close and so mysterious. We think of it as impossible to go and I think an artist should explore the forbidden. I followed the Treasury Department's requirements and soon was on my way.
My interest goes back to early adolescence and reading of the overthrow of Batista. My childhood belief in American invulnerability was shattered by the Bay of Pigs fiasco. My skepticism of politics was confirmed by Kennedy's attempt to cover-up the disaster. The deeper reason to go was to find out first hand what the people were like and how would this experience would affect me. I discovered more about myself and the American Dream than I thought possible. Art is a search for identity, both personally and as a society. I feel as if I'm just scratching the surface of what I learned in Cuba.
