Classical Guitar Music In Print, 1st Edition (1989)
Vol. 7 ISBN: 0-88478-025-2 (clothbound) 431 pages, $110.00
Classical Guitar Music In Print (1989) is edited by Mijndert Jape, a well-known lutenist, guitarist and musicologist of the Netherlands. The 431-page hardback volume contains comprehensive listings of over 8,000 published editions. The base volume of Classical Guitar Music In Print contains special chapters on the music of J.S. Bach and Francisco Tarrega. These chapters include more than 300 examples and detailed commentary.
The chapter devoted to the works of J.S. Bach focuses on works that have been transcribed or arranged for classical guitar. This chapter contains detailed listings of editions, as well as notated incipits from each work. These incipits are taken from the Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis of Wolfgang Schmieder, and cataloged according to original instrumentation (compositions for lute, unaccompanied violin, unaccompanied violoncello, flute, keyboard, etc.). BWV numbers are included, as are the original keys. In the case of suites, the incipit of each movement of the suite is given. Details and commentary on each of these works follows. The Bach chapter concludes with a listing of editions of Bach's music arranged for guitar.
When compiling the works attributed to Tarrega, a systematic order was developed to find the most authentic editions (the Tarrega Index=TI). The Preludes, Studies and Technical Exercises have been numbered by Mr. Jape and their incipits illustrated; further details and commentary on these pieces follows, as well as an index of editions containing Tarrega's works. The Tarrega Index is maintained in Classical Guitar Music In Print: 1998 Supplement.
Classical Guitar Music In Print: Supplement 1998
Vol. 7s ISBN: 0-88478-048-1 (clothbound) 339 pages, $95.00
Classical Guitar Music In Print: 1998 Supplement is a welcome addition to Jape's work. Edited by Donald Reese, this new volume lists an additional 11,600 published editions, and is organized similarly to Classical Guitar Music In Print with several notable exceptions. The Pre-Classic chapter is divided into two chapters; a chapter of Baroque works, and another of Early Music up to 1600. There are additional sections of specialized musical categories in the solo guitar chapter. The 1998 Supplement includes sections devoted to Flamenco, Popular, Jazz, and Sacred/Gospel music. In the ensemble chapters, some of the most common combinations of instruments (e.g. flute and guitar, etc.) are assigned separate sections. This arrangement greatly simplifies the search for chamber music.
