The River
47:1- 12

  • The river is often treated as being "symbolic" in nature; various opinions exist. Nevertheless, testimony from other prophets of the LORD relate that the river of water will indeed become an actual stream of water "in that day" of blessed promise.
  • The water streams eastward for for four thousand cubits in distance, from under the outer eastern gate. (This is gate through which the glory returns...) This distance is under1.25 miles in length. After this point the water converges to another depth.
  • At the 4,000 cubit limit, the water becomes a torrent that cannot be passed over by a man on foot...
  • The Mount of Olives will, according to Zechariah's prophecy, be cleft into parts, one part moving north and one part moving toward the south, before the water begins to flow from the temple complex on the mountain. It will flow further eastward through the prince's portion.

  • It is said that Lake Huleh was formed as a consequence of an earthquake in recent centuries, which lowered the valley floor and blocked the passage of the valley's water streams. Israel has since 1948 recovered the valley land for agriculture by providing drainage for the whole area. In the Gospel records, it is prophesied that Capernaum would be "thrust down to hades." The city's covering over was also probably due to earthquake activity; today the ancient site of Capernaum is thought to be Tel Hum.
