A Surrounding Court
40:14-17
- Traditionally "the east gate" has been the place of the judgment
seat. The first judges were "elohim" per Exodus 21:6; 22:8-9,
who judged matters under the Law of Moses before the temple was ever built.
Here, each "gate" house of the sanctuary has six court rooms.
Altogether there are eighteen such rooms on each pavement of the sanctuary,
but the purpose for some of these rooms varies.
- Each gate "house" of the Outer Court is surrounded by its
own lesser court of 60 cubits in width on each side. This courtyard surrounding
each "house" is located upon a pavement.
- Thirty chambers -- of unspecified dimensions -- are also located upon
the pavement of the Outer Court beyond the "posts" of the lesser
surrounding court. Their precise location is not stated. No measurements
are given for these chambers. But in order to locate 30 chambers upon this
pavement, the remaining area left -- after the three gate buildings and
their surrounding courts are taken into consideration -- must be calculated...
Known facts are:
Width of gatehouse................................... 25 cubits
Width of the surrounding court,
...............................................on one side 60 cubits
.............................................on other side 60 cubits
Total width of each gatehouse,
..................with its own surrounding court 145 cubits
Width of wall............................................... 6 cubits
Height of wall............................................... 6 cubits
Unknown fact: (at this point in the prophecy)
Length of the wall......................................... ? cubits
Unknown also:
Whether the lower pavement contains other areas in addition to these known
facts.
