The Basic Gatehouse Design
40:6-36
- Verse 6: Both "the threshold" and the "other threshold"
are "one rod broad," i.e., the length of the measuring rod is
six long cubits. Therefore the width of each threshold is six cubits also.
- Verse 7-10: The "little-chambers" are built with "posts."
- Verse 12: "The space" before the little-chambers is one cubit
wide, at each end of them, and is six cubits in length. This boundary
apparently does not cross the two main thresholds. It distinguishes the
compartments of the gate "house" from the two threshold noted
above.
- Verse 13: From the back of one room to the back of another
room, door to door, is a distance of 25 cubits. (See the Hebrew).
- Verse 16, 30: "The arches," which are 25 cubits long and
5 cubits wide, span the areas between the little chambers. ...Probably
they also span above the two main thresholds, beside "the spaces,"
but there is no dogma on this point.
- Verse 21-36: "The arches" are set upon "posts"
and have "windows" and "palm trees" in their design.
