Goals:
- To provide a support network for practitioners of first-person interpretation.
- To meet (and sponsor presenters) at Annual and Regional ALHFAM meetings, as well as independent First-Person congresses.
- To provide a clearinghouse for techniques, advice, employment opportunities, and resources.
- To organize a network of independent contractors and museums so that both types of agencies can locate appropriate talent for their projects.
- To promote high standards for quality first-person interpretation.
Methods:
- The committee disseminates its lists, guidelines, and
resources via the ALHFAM Web Page
(www.alhfam.org), Stacy Roth's Web Page
(www.voicenet.com/~frstprsn/index.htm), electronic
mail, regular mail, and the ALHFAM Bulletin.
Current Activities:
- The committee will sponsor at least one session at the 1998 Annual Conference.
- We are compiling a list of sites that present first-person programs regularly. This will be posted as soon as it is available
- Depending on interest, we may hold an interpreters' "retreat" in early 1998.
- We are investigating the possibility of group insurance rates for freelance interpreters and uninsured site interpreters.
- The committee sponsored a session at the 1997 ALHFAM Annual Conference titled "The Freelance Interpreter: Issues, Audiences, Marketing, & More." A three-page summary is available free to ALHFAM members by email or by sending me a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope. Non-members of ALHFAM can also have this document sent to them for a small donation (email me for details).
If you are a member of ALHFAM and would like to join the FPIPN (we pronounce it "pippin," like the apple; the "F" is silent), please send your name, address, affiliation (if any), telephone number, email address, and a short description of your first-person interests to Stacy Roth. Please feel free to send personal and site literature for referrals. Also, please indicate if you would like to take an active role in the FPIPN as part of our working committee. If you would like more information on ALHFAM offerings, publications, and membership, visit ALHFAM's information page at www.alhfam.org/alhfam.info.html.
