What is Web Control?

Web Control is an innovative, server-based Internet filtering system which promotes a positive Internet experience by blocking Web sites that may be inappropriate for viewing by children, students, families and employees.

Back

What types of sites are blocked by Web Control?

Generally, Web Control blocks sites containing Nudity, Adult Content, Sex, Violence, Drug Use, Gambling, Bad Language, Discrimination, Crime, Chat Rooms, and other high risk content lacking editorial control, including Web-based e-mail and free home page services.

Back

Is anything excluded from this list?

Of course. Web Control is smart enough to understand that although certain items fall within the generally blocked categories, they should not be filterd. For example, classical nudity (e.g., photos of Michaelangelo's David) is not blocked by Web Control . Also, items with educational value (e.g., drug abuse statistics) are not filtered.

How does Web Control differ from other filtering products that I have seen?

Most other Web filtering products are software based and run only on your computer. Many of these products can be easily disabled by a bright child, student or employee. On the other hand, Web Control is both software and hardware based, running both on your computer and Voicenet's servers. This makes it near impossible to circumvent (Web users will not be able to view any sites if the software elements are disabled on your machine) and updates occur automatically as new sites are added to Voicenet's Web Control database. Web Control utilizes the most up-to-date, reliable and efficient means of Web filtering available today. It employs a team of "Human Web Browser" who sift through the World Wide Web daily, looking for inappropriate sites and constantly updating Voicenet's Web Control service.

How much does Web Control cost?

Web Control is free to both dial-up and dedicated Voicenet Internet customers. This value-added service is just another element of Voicenet's mission to provide its customer with the best Internet experience anywhere.

How does Web Control work?

Web Control is a Web filtering service. It uses a combination of sophisticated server-based technology to block inappropriate Web content before it reaches your computer.

Back

No really, how does Web Control work?

When you sign up for Web Control , Voicenet will associate your username and password with the filtering product. This will disable all port 80 (the port used by all Web browsers to access content) requests originating from your account. Voicenet will then provide instructions for configuring your Web browser to instead direct your Web content requests through its Web Control servers. Your browser will then automatically utilize those servers for Web access, and all Web content will be filtered by Web Control (unless you disable it - see below).

Back

Will I be able to temporarily bypass or disable Web Control?

If you would like, Voicenet can implement Web Control for your dial-up account with a bypass feature. This will allow you to bypass the Web Control service and view blocked content for a specified time period (say, for example, 20 minutes) through the use of a special password. This provides parents, educators and employers using a dial-up account with the ability to access content that would otherwise be blocked by Web Control . When you want to view blocked sites, simply click on the override link in the Information Bar at the bottom of any Web Control content page, then type in your override password and the time period that you would like the bypass feature to stay in effect. Web Control will then allow you to view otherwise blocked sites. The override feature automatically turns itself off at the end of the specified time period. Dedicated Internet customers who are using Web Control must call Voicenet's 24/7 Network Operations Center to disable it.

Back

Will my child / employees be able to disable Web Control without the override password?

No. When you ask Voicenet to implement the Web Control service for you, we will block all port 80 requests originating through your username (machine for dedicated access customers). Because Web browsers generally use port 80 to request Web content, users who disable the software elements of Voicenet's Web Control service (i.e., try to bypass our filtering servers) will not be able to view any Web content at all.

Back

Can I use Web Control with my current Internet Web browser?

Yes. Web Control will work with most popular Web browsers, including Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator (and Communicator).

Back

Will my Internet Web browsing look any differently when I am using Web Control?

Yes. A small information bar will be displayed at the bottom of each Web page that you load to let you know that Web Control is hard at work filtering Internet sites that you visit.

Back

Will Web Control slow down the speed of my Web browser?

No. In fact, Web Control may even increase the speed with which your browser loads Web sites that you visit, due to its advanced Web caching technology.

Back

Does that mean that the Web pages I view with Web Control will be outdated ?

No. Web Control automatically reloads pages at certain defined intervals, to deliver new content in a timely manner when pages are updated by the author.

Back

How long does it take to activate Web Control?

Web Control will be activated shortly after your request is recieved by a Voicenet Representative. Customers using the online sign-up form will be notified by email once Web Control is active for their account.

Back

Is Web Control guaranteed to block ALL undesirable sites ?

Of course not. While Web Control is the most reliable, up-to-date and efficient means of blocking undesirable content available today, no product can make this guarantee, because new, inappropriate sites appear on the Web daily. We do our best, however, to block new, inappropriate sites as soon as possible.

Back

What can I do if I find an undesirable site that is not blocked ?

You can submit it for review through the link on the Information Bar which will appear at the bottom of your Web pages. If it falls within one of the blocked categories, it will be added to Voicenet's Web Control database.
