unitygain: 10 years on... Fall '08 @ Monkeytown
for everyone

End:         Nov 8, '08 01:00a

NYC is a very different place then it was 10 years ago...
as is most of the rest of the planet...
We don't mean to brag but evidently some good ideas do stick around for awhile...

Live audio visual performance is still in it's infancy as an art form...
We are happy to participate in its evolution...

and hopefully by Nov 5th we will all have some good news to celebrate together...

DEVILED LEGGS is a most unholy shindig concieved, organized, and curated by Evan Lipson. It's essentially one extended evening of highly celebratory and experimental dance music, with an emphasis on performers who are truly at the forefront of blurring the lines between rhythmically abstracted brutally harsh noise + ass thumping, heavily synchopated, timbrally rich, and vibrantly colorful electronic dance music. in short: crazy fucked up beats + noise.

Unitygain at MonkeyTown

Thursday Apr. 24th - reservations recommended
2 sets: 8:00 & 10:30 PM (dinner seatings at 7:30 & 10:00 PM)

NYC’s first dedicated realtime audio visual salon (1998) returns to MonkeyTown
for a “round robin” evening of quality live electronic audio visual duets…
In some cases this means one partner makes sound and the other image…
In other cases both partners may each contribute sound & image…

<>These days they’ve begun to call this kind of thing “Live Cinema” (in Europe at least) - not an ideal identifier but better than most alternatives - we still prefer: “realtime electronic audio-visual performance” for now… although even we know this is too long for anyone to actually say…
Whatever it’s called please join us:
Charles Cohen & Chris Jordan
Richard Garret & Adam Kendal
Sawako & Nobuko Hori
Ray Sweeten
& Davyd Lynton

for a multi-sensorial foray into the eternal NOW (baby)....
6 bux per set or 10 bux for both..

The Monophonic Antelope Cabal is a collective of electronic musicians from Pennington NJ.  Active since 1995, MAC artists have cranked out fresh and exciting live electronic performances in New York, Philly, New Jeruvistan, Delta Sector 9 and beyond.  .  This night marks the first time all of them have performed under one roof.  Join us for a night of live meepyfloop, side tempo pound puppy breaks, difficult listening, deep regressive acid-frog and snail-core.

Leisure Muffin, (Michael Hopkins), has been making electronic music since the early 90's and his style cris crosses everything from ambient to electro, hip hop, minimal house, and dub.  Currently, Leisure Muffin lives in his grandmothers basement surrounded by creepy dolls. When not engaging in flame wars on the Ableton Live online forums, he somehow finds time to craft regressive epic meepyfloop tracks. Among his 12 friends, he is considered to be the greatest meepyfloop producer EVER. Be advised to keep your children and pets away from him.

A bargain at any price, this will only run you $5 and a $10 food or drink minimum from the monkeytown peeps.

THE VALERIE PROJECT at The Museum of Modern Art, NYC  8:00–11:00 p.m.    Titus Theater 1

Underground Philadelphia musicians perform an original soundtrack to a rarely screened 35mm print of Valerie and her Week of Wonders, Jaromil Jires's 1970 folk-horror Czech New Wave classic. This coming of age fairytale, featuring vampires, the living dead, and pastoral landscapes, promises to awe and surprise you with its stunning psychedelic visuals and surrealist plot twists. The new soundtrack, composed by Greg Weeks of the band Espers, will be performed live by a ten-piece ensemble, lending a new perspective to this spectacular film.

20th MIX Festival

The MIX Film Festival has extended festival programming to include queer experimental performance audio components which includes a live performance sound event, audio installations, and a published compilation CD of new audio works to be given out at the festival.  MIX is working with musicians and artists from across US as well as international artists to present their works in a new exciting dialog alongside experimental filmmakers.

Despite Protestations
*V*I*R*G*O* NYC with Charles Cohan PA
A provocative improvisational sound artwork that juxtaposes abstract layers of analog waveforms with incongruous concrète soundscapes of gay male pornography, gay-bashing scenes from Hollywood films, and gay civil rights protests. In Despite Protestations, veteran sound artists *V*I*R*G*O* and Charles Cohen focus on the omnipresent tension between sex, politics, and violence. Recalling the random juxtapositions of John Cage and the speech intelligibility experiments of Luciano Berio, Lars-Gunnar Bodin and Bengt Emil Johnson, *V*I*R*G*O* and Charles Cohen blend and distort their emotionally charged source recordings in numerous ways, exploring the boundary at which sounds originally laden with such profound meaning can be denuded of all coherent intelligibility.

CD release show

Conceived in the spring of '07 within the confines of Sweet Randy studio, the compilation documents the explosion of philly's harsh electronic groups at a point of sweet, brutal cohesion. Recorded for the most part in one blistering, 4 hour session, Technicolor Hell covers the whole pitch spectrum w/ ascending howls, piercing harmonics, oozing beats, and deep, incinerating, rhythmic blasts. Featuring 11 of Philadelphia's most prolific visceral electronic groups/solos, the album comes in a screen printed zine package designed by local epic artist Mark Price  ($6)
